What are the properties of teak?
Teak is a deciduous hardwood tree from the highlands of South-east Asia; it does not come from tropical rainforests. Teak wood has a naturally high oil content, which makes it both stable and resistant to rotting when exposed to climatic extremes. For centuries, this special quality has made teak wood the preferred choice for marine decking and construction and makes it the premium timber for outdoor furniture.
Where does the timber you use come from?
We manufacture our wooden furniture from Teak (Tectona Grandis), which we source from Indonesian government owned plantations on the island of Java.
What is the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) ?
The Forest Stewardship Council™ is an international, non-profit association whose members include environmental, social groups, progressive forestry and timber related companies who are working together in order to improve forest management worldwide. The trademark of the FSC™ on a product indicates that the wood used to make it comes from a source that has been certified by the FSC™ as being well managed and meeting the environmental, social and economic standards that have been set by the FSC™. The FSC™ certificate is only granted to organisations following an annual audit to confirm their compliance with FSC™ standards. Our audit is performed by an FSC™ accredited Certification Body NEPCon™ and our license code is FSC-C007974. For further information, please visit www.fsc.org.
Future Policy Our policy is to move as quickly as possible to FSC™ certification of most of our furniture.
What is the teak weathering process?
Over a few months in an outdoor environment, untreated teak will weather to a silver grey color, which is due to the action of sunlight.
Why does new teak sometimes have "wild" dark or orange stripes?
These markings are perfectly normal and will disappear within a few days, following exposure to the UV spectrum in natural sunlight. These marks are often apparent following the kilning process, which we use to lower the moisture content of the timber prior to manufacture. Kilning reduces the incidence of small cracks that can appear in the furniture due to the changes in temperature and humidity encountered in an outdoor environment.
Why do cracks occasionally appear in my teak furniture?
Teak wood is a natural material and fine cracks in the end grain of components, e.g. legs and arms, may appear due to changes in temperature, humidity and the consequent change in moisture content of the wood. This is normal, especially in heavier components and it will not affect the serviceability of your furniture.
How do you clean teak?
Barlow Tyrie Teak Stain Guard™ forms an invisible layer to protect your teak furniture from everyday stains such as butter, oil and red wine, making the cleaning of accidental spills an easy task. Barlow Tyrie Teak Color Guard™, applied when the furniture is new or after cleaning, will help maintain the golden brown color of new teak by using pigment enhancers together with UV inhibitors to prevent the natural greying process.
Do I need to oil my teak furniture?
Treating with teak oil or other preservatives is not necessary, it will not extend the life of your furniture and is purely cosmetic. We do not recommend oiling your furniture.
What are the properties of stainless steel?
We use two grades of stainless steel: 316 Grade, commonly known as "marine grade" and 304 Grade, more commonly used for garden furniture. Both 316 and 304 are hard wearing and suitable for use in inland locations whilst 316 is ideal for use in coastal areas and marine environments, where oxidation could be a problem.
Please note: In coastal areas, and other salt water environments, our 316 grade stainless steel products and hardware may require more frequent cleaning and maintenance.
No stainless steel products should be purchased for use next to indoor chlorine or salt water swimming pools.
Please enquire for further details. If you have any questions or concerns about the grade that is best for your area, then please contact your supplier or our customer service department.
Please note that all outdoor furniture, including stainless steel, requires some maintenance to keep it looking its best.
How do I clean stainless steel?
Whilst 316 grade is highly resistant to corrosion it will still require some maintenance to preserve its finish, dependant on the environment. To maintain the finish of both 316 and 304 grades, we recommend you use Barlow Tyrie Stainless Steel Clean and Guard™, which cleans the stainless steel and leaves a fine layer of Teflon on the surface to help prevent the build up of contaminants.
What are the properties of aluminum?
The reason we have included aluminum in our range is because of its lightweight properties.
We use the very best "Virgin" aluminum which is stronger and longer lasting. We powder-coat the aluminum to prevent oxidation and ensure it gives long service.
How do I clean aluminum?
We recommend you use Barlow Tyrie Aluminum Cleaner™.

Cushions and Parasols
Are your fabrics waterproof?
We manufacture cushions in selected colours with an additional barrier finish which makes them more water repellent and quick drying. This Sunbrella&tm; V77 barrier finish is called "Rain" fabric. If cushions become saturated then place them on one edge and allow the water to drain away until they are thoroughly dry. Do not store cushions when they are wet.
NB: The breathable section, with zipped-fastener, is not waterproof
NB: With folded flap turned-down, this may prevent water from getting in
Do your parasol fabrics provide ultraviolet protection?
Our fabrics have been tested and proven to provide up to 98% protection from the harmful effects of the sun, depending on the depth of color. White and lighter colored fabrics provide less protection than darker fabrics. This protection is inherent to the product and usage will not reduce it.
What are your cushions made from?
We manufacture our cushions using Sunbrella™ fabric, made from a durable, 100% solution dyed acrylic fibre that is color fast in sunlight. A stain repellent is applied to the fabric, although it will withstand vigorous cleaning if necessary.
How do I clean cushions and parasols?
One of the best ways to keep our fabrics looking good, and to delay deep or vigorous cleaning, is to properly maintain the fabrics. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.
To clean and maintain your cushions and parasols, we recommend you use soft soapy water to remove dirt, grease, oil and mould. After cleaning we recommend using Barlow Tyrie Fabric Weather Guard. This protects the fabric from the ageing effects of the weather. We recommend you leave the cushion covers on during the cleaning process. We suggest you clean your cushions before you store them in a dry, well-ventilated area. Do not store cushions when they are wet.
Special order cushions have a 6 weeks lead time. Replacement covers are available for all cushions.
Do I need to use a base if I am locating a parasol through a dining table?
Yes, all parasols must be located in the recommended parasol base for safety reasons. We supply our standard parasol bases for when you wish to use a parasol through a dining table, a free standing base is available for use without a table. What are the properties of laminated ceramic?
In Barlow Tyrie’s search for technological and aesthetic solutions for ceramic tile products, our result found an Italian supplier that can match our quality, who are broadening their horizons in the design world and paving the way for a new concept in ceramic surface. The fine, beguiling appeal of the surface finishes constitutes a ‘skin’: resistant to shocks, to scratches, water- and oil-repellent, resistant to acids, to UV rays which do not fade over time. Easy to clean and hygienic, since they are non-absorbent, the materials are natural and free from toxic substances. A new concept of surface with universal potential and versatility that adds new value to the interior design world.
How do I care for ceramic surfaces?
Ceramic resists to organic and inorganic solvents, disinfectants and detergents. It can be easily cleaned without affecting its surface characteristics. We recommend using soapy water to keep the high aesthetic and technical performance for these exceptional table tops. It is highly scratch-proof and resistant to deep abrasion. The properties of the ceramic remain unchanged even after frequent cleaning. Our tables use ‘316 marine grade’ stainless steel with these ceramic tops, combining the best materials with a design that is very comfortable and looks great.
How is laminated ceramic made?
Slabs with a thickness of just 3mm, are made in porcelain stoneware and produced with an innovative technology, by compacting the material and then firing it in an electric kiln at temperatures over approx. 1220°C, suitably designed to ensure the product evenness. The slabs manufactured in this way are perfectly flat and can later be cut or trimmed with total size accuracy.
Our Monterey collection uses ¼" round braided cord, for the seat and backrest. This is made from yarns; both Textilene™ and Diversatex™ Olefin. The brown colored cord is ideal for outdoor products; It is light in weight, has an impeccable finish and has a temperature resistant quality. The fabric is rugged non-stretch woven polyester with a PVC coating; it is resistant to UV, moisture, mould, as well as being waterproof and flame retardant. The cord is known throughout the furniture industry for its durability and strength. Also available on selected models in North America with "Chalk White" color cord.
