About Barlow Tyrie
To be the leading manufacturer of leisure furniture
whose brand represents the highest standard of quality and service.
At Barlow Tyrie, we only manufacture furniture of the highest quality, achieved by combining the best materials with our many years of experience. Our range of furniture includes many pieces that have won design awards and are frequently copied classics.
- We make our teak furniture from the top grade of plantation grown teak (tectona grandis) sourced from Indonesia. We combine the teak with fittings made from marine-quality solid brass or stainless steel.
- We make our stainless steel furniture from two grades of stainless steel; 316 grade, known as 'marine grade' due to its common usage in coastal environments, and 304 grade, which is more commonly used inland. Both grades make for excellent quality garden furniture.
- The powder coated aluminium furniture we manufacture is created from 'Virgin Aluminium', so-called because it has not previously been recycled. This makes the furniture even stronger and longer lasting.
- For our woven furniture, we use the finest synthetic material, which is woven by hand over powder coated aluminium frames. This combination creates a piece of furniture that is strong, colour-fast and resistant to sun and rain.
- For chairs that require a fabric sling, such as the Horizon Stacking Armchair, the sling is made from Textilene ® which is woven from a PVC coated polyester, non-stretch yarn resulting in a product that is very strong, colour-fast and resistant to sun and rain. Similarly, our cushions are made from Sunbrella fabric; a 100% solution dyed acrylic fibre that is colour fast and resistant to mildew.
Barlow Tyrie was founded in 1920 by Frederick Barlow and Victor Tyrie in London, England. They quickly gained a reputation for their outdoor furniture, made almost entirely by hand and to the highest standards.
In 1967 Peter, son of the founder Victor Tyrie, joined the company and in order to increase production levels relocated to a new factory at Braintree, outside of London. Growing demand for the company's products has resulted in the steady expansion of this factory, which now occupies 90,000 ft2 / 8,000 m2.
In 1986 the company formed its subsidiary Barlow Tyrie Inc. in New Jersey, USA, to service the large casual furniture market in North America. This subsidiary has permanent showrooms in Chicago and at High Point, North Carolina.
In 1992 the company formed its subsidiary P.T. Barlow Tyrie Indonesia to ensure a continuing source of teak from the environmentally sound plantations on the island of Java. This action was in response to a ban, at that time, on the export of sawn timber by the Indonesian government. The factory of 200,000 ft2 / 18,000m2 processes teak logs, kilns sawn timber and manufactures components and products which are distributed to retail outlets and trade customers worldwide.
The company remains a family business and is now in its 3rd generation with Peter's sons, James and Mark, working in sales and design.

Here is a selection of comments from our customers:
Thanks for your helpful and fast service. Much appreciated.
Karen (Newport Beach, California):
I just received my Mercury dining table and chairs – they are absolutely beautiful!!!!
Our Sissinghurst bench was delivered yesterday. We are very pleased with it. It’s very well made and it looks beautiful in the garden. Thank you.
Jan and Ian:
We are absolutely delighted with the Chaise. And, as usual, it is of the impeccable quality Barlow Tyrie is known for. In another month or so, if an additional Mission Chaise is still available, we will be ordering another.
Just wanted to say how delighted I am with my recent purchases. Delivery was excellent & the items very easy to assemble & just as great as I had hoped they would be. Have items from you that are now 20 years old and have added to them as don't need replacing! Thank you.
We are sending this e-mail to thank you for the fantastic service Barlow Tyrie provided in replacing the leg of our 16-year old seat. All that was needed were a few e-mails with you and an hour’s work by your excellent carpenter Mick. One would wish there would be more companies like that on this planet. We will certainly recommend your company to whoever wants to hear about it (and even to those who don’t !!). Thanks again.
I meant to write earlier to thank you so much for coming to repair our garden table and chair while we were away. We did not realize that companies with such excellent service still existed! We are much impressed and very grateful.
Adrian (Oregan, USA):
This weekend I cleaned my Barlow Tyrie furniture and applied teak oil. I have dragged it half way around the world with me from the Cotswolds to Oregon. It will be 27 years old in June yet still looks amazing and is as solid as a rock. Hundreds of dinner parties, birthdays, promotions and commotions. Thank you so very much.
Once again thanks for your perseverance on this matter, you are a shining example of what Customer Service should be about and a real credit to your company. I will certainly tell my friends about this experience with Barlow Tyrie.
Just a short e-mail to say thank you for getting the Waveney memorial bench sent through so quickly. Mrs B. has just been in to have a look at it prior to delivery. She was very impressed and would also like me to pass on her thanks to you and Barlow Tyrie for going the extra mile to have it made.
Teresa (Maldon, Essex):
My brother and I would like to say we are very pleased with the bench and the plaques dedicated to our patents, Harry and Amy. It is now in the Braintree Public Gardens and many positive comments have been made about it. Thank you for looking after us
Carolyn (Hove, Brighton):
I am writing to you to say how pleased we are with the Barlow Tyrie service. Mr Taylor called on Wednesday to fix two folding chairs and did an excellent job. There are not many companies which offer such a comprehensive after-sales service and it’s well worth paying a higher price for your furniture then some of your competitors charge
Marcus (Winchmore Hill, London):
This is just a short note of praise for your company and the service I have received from it. I have over the year acquired various items of Barlow Tyrie furniture, including parasol and metal stand. After phoning your company for advice on the parasol, one of your specialists phoned me back to help us with a small repair and later that week he called in, as he was in the area. To our delight the problem was resolved by your Barlow Tyrie specialist with a small replacement part. I have just come in from sitting under the parasol on your wonderful furniture to write this and I can’t tell you enough how utterly impressed we are with your workmanship, customer service and the work was carried out so efficiently. I did not think this professional attitude to customer care still existed in the UK. It is so encouraging.
Joy (Aldbourne, Wiltshire):
We would like to thank you for the excellent service we have had from you when buying a whole range of outdoor leisure furniture. We are also very pleased with the service from your agent in this area.
Paul (Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire):
I am writing to thank you for the seat that you produced as a memorial to my late father. It was delivered safely to the former Kempton Park Pumping Station
James (Marlborough, Wiltshire):
I want to thank you for the manner of your response to the problem with our parasol stand. We did not really expect the level of service we received or the free replacement part. It really is a credit to your company that you are able to offer such a service, and the promptness in dealing with a replacement was superb.
Julian (Bromsgrove, Worcestershire):
I am writing to complement you on the quite outstanding service that I have received from your company during the past week or so. In very sad circumstances I was asked to acquire on someone else’s behalf a Barlow Tyrie Sissinghurst seat, which I discovered is not such an easy teak at this time of year. I spoke with your garden furniture department who understood that I needed this item just as soon as possible, days rather than weeks. Not without effort and within a relatively short space of time we located one and happy it was delivered to a delighted recipient in Birmingham yesterday. Will you please be kind enough to pass on my thanks and gratitude to the people that so willingly and cheerfully helped as well as served me.
On behalf of the Duemmer Parish Council I thank you most sincerely for the pieces of teak that you recently sent me. The wood will be used to repair a teak bench that is used by the elderly in the village and had been vandalised. Your kind gift of the wood is much appreciated.
Bob (Newgate, Surrey):
I would like to thank you on behalf of the Walton Health Golf Club, for the outstanding quality of the bench and inspirations, commemorating our centenary year. Your company’s workmanship was greatly admired by the golf teams which assembled at Walton on 4th July.
Jill (Huntingdon, Cambridge):
It is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of your product that I was able to restore my very old Barlow Tyrie table and chairs to their former glory - to look like new. Taking advice from customer services and your carpenter, who arranged to have some new slats and new fixings delivered, so I followed ‘what to do’ and started the renovation. I would be most grateful if you could pass on my grateful thanks to all the staff and the help received.
David (Colgate, West Sussex):
Mr Taylor carried out an excellent repair and was very helpful to us. I would also like to thank your staff for the prompt and efficient way in which they helped us over this service. It makes us glad we bought our garden furniture from Barlow Tyrie.”
Marianne (West Bridgford, Nottingham):
I am writing to thank you so much for your excellent service. We have had a Barlow Tyrie bench for over 25 years. Unfortunately one slat has broken. On telephoning your Company we were informed that a replacement would be sent to us and when we asked the cost were told this was free of charge. The slat arrived within days. To receive such a service after 25 years really does make buying a Barlow Tyrie a lifetime bargain!
I would like to record my compliments on the excellent service and advice offered by Mr Taylor, when he visited my home in Henley yesterday to assess and advise on the Wasp damage to my garden suite. He was knowledgeable, helpful and most pleasant to deal with. Thanks to your customer service manager for facilitating this and my compliments to Mr Taylor for giving me the sort of service I expect from a quality manufacturer.
Mrs. L. phoned yesterday to say the cushions had arrived and look absolutely superb. She said to give her regards and sincere thanks for all your help – you’ve been wonderful!!
Louis (Helvoirt, The Netherlands):
By the way I would love to express my gratitude for your great service on the Barlow Tyrie table of the Schabos-family. They are very pleased!
Edith (Southport, Lancashire):
Thank you so very much, the Rothesay” seat arrived at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club yesterday. Now it is duly installed on the Terrace. Also my grandson having a practice round, sat on it with great pride!
Nick (Bledlow, Bucks):
Many thanks indeed for sending me your splendid brochure. The furniture looks just as good as it ever was. Thank you also for the replacement bolts. Having been an owner of Barlow Tyrie furniture for the last 20 years or so, I am delighted to confirm that following my pressure wash [with caution] last week the furniture looks just as good as new!! You really do produce an excellent product.
David (Braintree, Essex):
In these times it is, perhaps, more normal to receive letters of complaint. However, when I get exceptional service I like it to be noted. I have recently bought a memorial seat from your company. The quality of workmanship is excellent and I am delighted with it. No more than you would expect, I guess. What encourages me to write, though, is the courtesy an d professionalism I got from two of your staff in particular. Your customer services and an articulate, well presented man who turned up, exactly on time, in a clean van and delivered the bench. Your staff assisted, hugely, in making of a bad day, [regarding the loss of my beloved wife] better. You are probably very proud of your people. You are entitled to be. Please extend my considerable thanks to all involved and special thanks to the above mentioned.
Fiona (Kowloon, Hong Kong):
This is just a line to let you know that my furniture arrived safe and sound, and we are all thrilled to bits with it! I would like to thank you for your organisation – everything this end went incredibly smoothly!
FJ (Prestbury, Cheshire):
My wife sprung a surprise on me by having a considerable amount of garden furniture delivered last Saturday morning. I was absolutely flabbergasted to find out that someone was prepared to provide the right tools and easy instructions that did not require a degree in mechanical engineering. The quality of the furniture is excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending Barlow Tyrie to others in the future.
Rosie (Guildford, Surrey):
Many thanks for replacing the two arms and bench seat slat recently. I am very impressed with your excellent service and find it so refreshing in today’s ‘throw away’ world. We are delighted with our garden furniture and should we decide to buy some more, then you will most certainly be top of our list. Thanks once again!
